A list of essential do's and don'ts

Moving into university halls is exciting, but adjusting to life in university halls can also be challenging, especially for those who have never lived away from home before. To help you make the most of this unique opportunity, we have compiled a list of essential do's and don'ts for moving into university halls.

The Do's:

Do pack strategically:

When packing for your new home in university halls, it might be worth finding some of your flatmates first and seeing what everyone already has. There is no reason for you to buy a new toaster if four other people already have one handy.

Remember to bring essential items like bedding, kitchen utensils, toiletries, and clothing suitable for all seasons. Pack light where possible and prioritize practicality over bringing everything with you.

Do get to know your flatmates:

Introduce yourself to your flatmates and start building relationships as soon as possible. Moving is stressful enough without factoring in the idea of living with new people, so having a chat to your flatmates when you see them and getting the ball rolling can help ease you into this new situation.

Do respect others:

Living in close proximity with other people means that respecting boundaries is key. Communicate openly and honestly about your expectations and be mindful of noise levels, cleanliness, and personal space. Be considerate of others, and they are more likely to do the same for you.

Do take advantage of common areas:

All of our university halls offer some form of communal space such as kitchens, study areas, and common rooms. Make use of these to meet new people, socialize, and study as these spaces often help create a sense of community and can help you meet new people.

Do embrace the hall community:

University halls provide an opportunity to engage with a diverse range of individuals. Attend events, join clubs or societies, and participate in activities to help you interact with more of them. Embracing the hall community will help you make friends, expand your horizons, and create lasting memories.

The Don'ts:

Don't isolate yourself:

Moving into university halls can be overwhelming, especially if you don't know anyone initially. Avoid isolating yourself in your room; instead, try to socialize and connect with your fellow hallmates. Remember that many students are in the same boat and are also nervous about moving in, but eager to make friends.

Don't neglect your responsibilities:

Living independently in university halls comes with newfound freedom. However, make sure you’re not neglecting your academic and personal responsibilities. Establish a study routine, prioritize your coursework, and manage your time effectively. Striking a good balance between socializing and studying is key.

Don't be afraid to seek support:

Adjusting to a new environment can be challenging, and it's important to recognize when you need support. Whether it's academic advice, emotional well-being, or personal issues, don't hesitate to reach out to our RLAs, university support services, or counselling services.

Don't engage in disruptive behaviour:

Maintain a respectful and considerate attitude towards your fellow hallmates. Avoid excessive noise or disruptive behaviour that may disturb others. Remember that the hall is a shared space, and everyone deserves a peaceful environment to study and relax.

Don't forget to take care of yourself:

Living away from home can be overwhelming at times. Ensure you prioritize self-care, both physically and mentally. Eat well, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and find healthy ways to manage stress.
