Choosing the right accommodation can shape your student experience. At the University of Leeds there are plenty of different types of accommodation, each offering different layouts, social environments and price points, which is important to consider when searching for a place to live.
Here are some things to consider when looking at your options:
Are you someone who is looking for the convenience and structure of meals being made to them? Or maybe you would prefer the flexibility of a shared or private kitchen?
Although you will have access to a kitchen to make meals and snacks in both catered and non-catered halls, catered accommodation offers regular meals or Meal Plan credit included in your rent, so you don’t have to worry about meals throughout the day.
Most of our residences are ensuite. Ensuite rooms offer private bathrooms and are typically found in residences like Central Village, Leodis, St Marks Residences, and many partnership halls.
Shared bathrooms are more common in our traditional halls, which can lower rent costs and often come with regular cleaning.
Shared bathrooms might seem intimidating, but typically you will only be sharing with 1-3 other flatmates, similarly to how you will if you move into a shared house in future years.
You can learn more by comparing rooms on the accommodation website.
Single sex accommodation is offered in most of our halls of residence, where students of the same sex can live together in the same flat.
Whilst the majority of accommodation is mixed sex, but there may be religious, cultural or personal reasons why this is not suitable for you.
You can select single sex accommodation as a preference on your accommodation application.
Most of our halls of residence offer quieter lifestyle rooms.
Whilst we have a policy of quiet hours in all University halls of residence between 11pm and 8am, applicants who select quieter lifestyle accommodation do so in the knowledge that they will be required to show extra consideration to their flatmates and neighbours in keeping noise to a minimum, wherever possible.
You can select this option as a preference on your accommodation application.
Location
Leeds is a big, exciting city, and our accommodation is in different areas. Make sure to have a look at our area guides below to consider if they are the places you would like to live.
Other things to consider with location include:
We understand that all applicants want to be as close to campus as possible. As a city campus, our residences are situated in a number of locations near to the campus, the city centre and student areas of the city.
All residences are within 20 minutes' walk or less to campus, with the exception of Lupton Residences which is located in the vibrant suburb of Headingley.
Excellent travel links make getting to campus and beyond is quick and convenient. Many students find that locations slightly further from campus offer lower price points or more social environments, so consider what is most important to you.
Many students choose slightly further locations for different price points or social environments, so consider what is most important to you.
Each Leeds residence is positioned near different walking and cycling routes, bus connections and train stations. You might want to consider key transport routes you require to travel in Leeds.
How to get around Leeds
Accommodation cost will vary depending on several things such as location, facilities and services.
- Catered accommodation will generally cost more than self-catered, as your rent would include the cost of 12 meals per week during the term.
- En-suites cost more than shared bathrooms due to it being a private amenity and taking up more bedroom space – decide if the benefit of a personal bathroom is worth the cost when reviewing your options.
-
Accommodation on campus costs more than those off campus, so you should consider the balance of budget and convenience.
Facilities and amenities
All residences are different, with varied facilities such as:
Accommodation like Devonshire Hall and Lupton Residence have music and drama practice rooms which can be useful if you practice an instrument and want to meet others with similar interests.
There are some fantastic green spaces across university accommodations, including residences like Devonshire Hall, James Baillie Park and North Hill Court.
They are also situated close to great walks such as Wellwood and Meanwood Valley Trail that run along the back of these residences.
If you are someone who wants a nice outdoor space to spend time in, check on the accommodation website to see what spaces are available at each accommodation.
Some of our halls have on-site gyms, however when you live in halls you will also receive a premium membership to The Edge, our on campus fitness, sport and wellbeing complex, included in your stay – so you have plenty of options for gym access.
Cycle storage facilities are available at most of our residences.
The University also runs The Bike Hub where you can hire a bike for the year, so you can easily bike around the city from halls to campus.
All University residences have onsite laundry facilities, though the number and location of machines vary.
Laundrette access is typically provided through card or app-based payment systems.
If there is an amenity you can’t live without, you should make sure this is prioritised in your accommodation choice when you apply.
Accessibility and health requirements
Students with disabilities or long-term health conditions can request adapted rooms.
Accessible rooms are available across different residences, and early application with relevant documentation helps ensure suitable allocation.
You can find out more about how we can support your requirements on the accommodation website.
Support and wellbeing
Students have access to:
The central Residence Life team offers you lots of opportunities to build important life skills and engage in community events to develop your confidence during your academic journey.
Residence Life Wardens are members of staff who look after the pastoral care within halls, supporting you to make the most of your time in halls and to ensure that you feel safe, happy and supported in your accommodation.
Residence Life Assistants (RLAs) are students who are on call on evenings on weekdays and weekend during term time in accommodation, so you have someone to speak to if you have any issues.
All the RLAs are fully trained and work closely with Wardens and the Residence Life team to make sure you are supported in halls.
Note: There are no RLAs at Hepworth Lodge, White Rose View or Royal Park Flats.
More widely, the University of Leeds has a dedicated wellbeing service you have access to throughout your time at university.
The service is a team of professional counsellors, wellbeing practitioners and mental health advisors. They offer free and confidential support to you during your time as a student.
The University offers scholarships and bursaries based on personal circumstances, including the Leeds Bursary, personal circumstances scholarship and more.
It is worth exploring to see if you are eligible for additional funding to support you during your time at Leeds.
