Commuting to university doesn’t mean missing out on the fun! With a little planning, you can enjoy a vibrant social life and make the most of your time on campus.
Here we are sharing some of our top tips on how you can do this.
Join the commuters society
The best society to join if you commute is the commuter society!
The society brings together like-minded commuter students through accessible 'rush-hour socials'.
Their aim is that all students (no matter their transport arrangements or distance from the centre of Leeds) should be able to attend.
Beyond traditional socials, the society also works hard to improve the student experience of commuters.
A few ways they do this is by ensuring commuters are included in freshers materials, holding informational welcome talks and planning and constructing a commuters' student lounge on campus.
Make the most of your breaks
Use gaps between lectures to attend mini-events, grab coffee with friends, or join study groups on campus.
Leeds Student Union and campus cafés are great spots for informal meet-ups, you can discover lots of our cafés on the Great Food At Leeds website.
Make sure to keep an eye on the Residence Life events page to see if any upcoming events peak your interest! We'd love to see you at an upcoming event👋
Explore Leeds with a friend
A great way to feel connected is to build relationships with other students on campus. You might do this by:
- Planning occasional trips with classmates, for example Hyde Park, Kirkgate Market, and the city’s museums are all close to campus and make a great trip out without taking up the whole day.
- Many societies organise day trips that finish early enough for commuters to get home comfortably, discover societies on the LUU site.
Use online communities
Join Residence Life social channels and commuter WhatsApp group to stay in the loop.
Follow the LUU social media accounts for event updates, many activities are designed with commuters in mind.
Attend daytime events
Look out for lunchtime talks, workshops, and pop-up stalls around campus.
Leeds University Union often hosts fairs and socials during the day which are perfect for commuters who can’t stay late.
Plan ahead
If you want to attend an evening event, check transport options in advance.
Sometimes sharing a taxi or carpooling with friends makes it easier if you don't live too far away, or alternatively you could use the commuter rooms to stay a night so you don't miss out on the fun.
