Residence Energy Saving Competition

Posted 2 weeks ago

Which residence can save the most energy over the break?

Residence Life is collaborating with the University's very own Energy Team to run a residence energy saving competition over the winter break!

The competition will run from Saturday 14th December until Sunday 12th January and if your building is listed below, you can take part! The prize for the winning buildings will be a free social for your residence in Terrace, Leeds University Union. This will be in January and will include a free drinks voucher that can be redeemed at the bar.

Whether you are staying on campus over the break or visiting friends & family, there is plenty you can do to participate in the competition. By participating, you can help the University reduce carbon emissions and support the Net Zero plan!

How will it work?

Residences will be measured against each other in two separate groups, listed below. Similar building types have been grouped together to make the competition fair, and there will be a winner from both groups!

Group A

  • Central Village
  • Henry Price
  • Montague Burton
  • Sentinel Towers
  • St Mark's
  • Charles Morris

Group B

  • Devonshire Hall
  • Ellerslie Hall & Annexes
  • Lyddon Hall & Annexes
  • North Hill Court & North Hill House
  • Shared Housing (Springfield Mount, Clarendon Place, Clarendon Road, Lyddon Terrace)
  • Lupton Residence

The winner of the competition will be the residence that achieves the greatest percentage reductions in electricity consumption compared to normal consumption. Normal consumption will be calculated from the average weekday and weekend electricity consumption of each residence during term time.

How can I save participate and save energy?

You can participate by practicing good housekeeping while on campus! This includes zero cost measures that can be implemented into a daily routine, such as switching off lights when you leave a room, turning off electrical equipment rather than leaving it on standby and setting thermostatic radiator valves (TRV) to level 3 rather than switching them on and off. If you are leaving for the break make sure to follow the shutdown checklist:
