Adopting good housekeeping measures can reduce energy use.

Since August 2022, the Energy Team have identified and delivered interventions which have saved more than 2,500 tonnes of CO2. This is from delivering upgrades to things like lighting and heating systems and identifying opportunities to use buildings more efficiently across campus. But we need your help to reduce energy consumption even further to reach Net Zero by 2030!

Adopting “Good Housekeeping Measures” can reduce the energy consumption of university buildings by an average of 5%. Good Housekeeping Measures are simple, no cost measures that can be implemented into your daily routine.

  • Approximately 25% of heat is lost through windows and doors. Remember to close doors behind you and shut windows when you leave.
  • Reducing room temperature by 1°C can save up to 10% of energy used for heating in colder weather.
  •  An average shower consumes 9 – 10 litres per minute. By shortening a 10-minute shower by 5 minutes, you could save around 45 -50 litres of water and also energy associated with heating water.
  • A tumble dryer uses roughly 4.5 kWh per cycle on average. Make sure you have a full load before you use one.
  • Lighting at the university makes up to 20% of electricity consumption. Please turn of lights when you leave a room.
  • Setting your heating controls to a medium level (set point 2 or 3) and leaving them to control automatically is the most efficient way to control your space heating and maintain comfort conditions.
  • Washing clothes at 30°C rather than higher temperatures will save around 40% of the energy used each year. Modern washing powders and detergents work just as effectively at lower temperatures. Wait until you have a full load before putting on a wash.
  • Don’t leave your electrical equipment on standby – switch it off at the plug.
  • Don’t overfill the kettle – The more water you boil, the more energy you use, so make sure you’re only filling the kettle with the water you need.
