Take a look at some of our essential bucket list activities to help you make the most of your experience at the University of Leeds.
Discover Leeds' Rich Culture
Take a trip to the Leeds Art Gallery and throw yourself into the city's artistic scene. Leeds also has a street art trail around the city, where you can explore and see massive pieces of artwork around every corner.
Attend a performance at the iconic Leeds Playhouse or explore the cultural events going on at the Leeds Grand Theatre.
Hike the Yorkshire Dales
Leeds is an amazing city, but have you explored further afield? Take a break and recharge while exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales.
Gather a group of friends and make your way to Golden Acre Park for a nice calm walk around the lake, or challenge yourself to a hike up Otley Chevin. You’ll get to explore nearby neighbourhoods on your travels, get some exercise and see some good old-fashioned Yorkshire beauty.
Immerse Yourself in the Leeds Music Scene
As a city with a rich musical history, Leeds offers a diverse music scene with something for everyone to enjoy.Head to live gigs at iconic venues like Brudenell Social Club or Belgrave Music Hall to discover new bands and experience some unforgettable performances.
Every year, Millennium Square hosts Sounds of the City, a series of live gigs in July. As it takes place over summer, it’s a great opportunity to experience live music outdoors, and it’s always a highlight seeing your favourite band belting out their biggest tunes as the sun sets over the city.
Cheer for your local team
Immerse yourself in the excitement of a rugby match at Headingley Stadium, support the Leeds Rhinos and feel the adrenaline rush as you cheer for the home team.
Experience the thrill of international cricket by attending a Test Match at Headingley, and enjoy the unique atmosphere and witness world-class cricket in action.
Explore Kirkgate Market
Shopping at a market might sound like a fairly chill experience, but Kirkgate Market is one of the biggest indoor markets in Europe and is home to so many shops and storefronts you won’t find anywhere else.
Once you’re done shopping, you can grab a bite to eat and sample one of the 12 street food vendors in the market kitchen. Our favourites include Istanbul Bakery, Manjit’s Kitchen, and Bahn & Mee.
Participate in Volunteer Opportunities
There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with Residence Life that allow you to not only give back to your local community but also the environment.
We run several volunteer days throughout the year including Wild Work Days, where you’ll venture to local nature reserves to help keep them clean and beautiful for others to enjoy, and North Hill Well Wood Project days, where you’ll be helping to plant and develop the wellbeing garden at one of our residences. Check out our Outdoor Volunteering blog or keep an eye on our events to find out more.
Attend a Varsity Match
Experience the exhilarating atmosphere of a Varsity match between the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University in Spring.
Whether it's rugby, football, or another sport, cheering on your team is a must for any true Leeds student.
Celebrate Leeds Carnival
Experience the diversity and vibrancy of Leeds by attending the annual Leeds Carnival in Summer. Join the parade, indulge in delicious Caribbean food, and dance to the rhythm of the festivities.
Fly your flag at Leeds Pride
Given that Leeds has a massive LGBTQ+ community presence, it won’t surprise most to find out that we host the UK’s friendliest pride, where the city comes together to celebrate and showcase the work of some amazing organisations that operate in the city during this free annual event.
Starting with the big parade from Millennium Square, down the Headrow and ending at Freedom Quarter, the free annual event allows people to fly their flag, celebrate their community and enjoy a day of LGBTQ+-themed entertainment.
Attend a Festival in Leeds
Experience the electrifying atmosphere of Leeds Festival, a highlight on the city's annual events calendar, or head to some of the amazing one-day festivals the city has to offer, like Live at Leeds or Slamdunk.
