Everything you need if you’re moving to the UK for uni

You have made a great choice to study in the United Kingdom! It is a big change to live in a new country, and you may feel excited and nervous at the same time. In this guide we'll help with packing your bags for uni.

👕 Clothes for cold weather

The UK is known for its rainy and chilly climate, so you'll need warm and waterproof clothing, such as coats, jackets, sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves, boots and an umbrella.

💻 Electronic devices

You’ll need your laptop, phone, chargers, headphones and any other gadgets you use for studying or entertainment.

You might also want to bring a USB stick, Bluetooth speaker or camera if you have them. Don’t forget to get a power extension lead and a socket adaptor if you’re coming from a country with different plugs.

📄 Important documents

Don't forget all your paperwork, things like: passports, visa papers, university acceptance letters, bank statements. Keep everything together in a file or folder so it doesn't get lost.

❤️ Personal touches

It's a good idea to bring some personal items that make you feel comfortable and happy, such as photos, decorations, books, small games or cuddly toys.

When you move in to your accommodation you can use these things to help it feel a bit more like home.

Limited space in your suitcase?

Don't worry if you're struggling for space in your luggage, however, as you can buy a lot of these things when you arrive if needed.

Here are some tips to help you pack smartly:

  • Choose clothes that are versatile and easy to layer. You don’t need to bring your whole wardrobe, just some essential items that you can mix and match and wear in different seasons. You can also buy more clothes when you arrive if you need them.
  • Pack items that are compact and lightweight. You don’t need to bring bulky items like pillows, duvets or towels, as you can buy them cheaply in the UK.
  • You also don’t need to bring any items that are easily available or provided in the UK, such as kettles, toasters, kitchen utensils, or stationery.

You might feel overwhelmed by all the things you need to do and pack before you go. But don’t worry, by following this list, you’ll be able to pack everything you need and nothing you don’t. So, get ready to pack your bags and embark on your amazing adventure in the UK. We can’t wait to welcome you! 🇬🇧
