The end of term is approaching! You may be preparing to leave for the winter break.
Make sure to prepare to leave properly to leave your accommodation in safe, clean conditions until you return in the new year.
Here's how you can do this:
Remember to take any valuable items with you and clean your belongings from any communal areas.
If you do not wish to take them home, make sure to move them to your bedroom and keep floors and surfaces in communal areas clear for cleaning.
We are unable to accept responsibility for any damage caused, so take time to ensure everything you own is safely away.
Empty your fridge of any food that will go out of date.
If you plan to leave over break, make sure to empty the fridge and freezer of all food. We will aim to defrost and clean fridges and freezers, however, this will only be possible if it is completely empty.
If you have any long date canned food you want to get rid of, consider donating these to a local foodbank if you can.
Take out any waste
- Empty bins before you leave - you don't want to return to month old rubbish!
- Take out recycling such as drink bottles or cans and place them in outside recycling buildings on site.
- If you have a food waste caddy, please put the food waste in the exterior food waste bin.
Unplug your electrics:
While you are not living in halls over the break, it's important to make sure we are saving the planet as much as possible!
This means unplugging your electrical items (not just turning them off or leaving them on standby), shutting your windows and doors, and unplugging kitchen items such as kettles, microwaves, etc.
Over the winter break, we are doing the energy saving challenge, where the hall who has reduced its energy consumption the most (proportionally) will win a free social in terrace with a free drink for all! You can see more information about the competition further down this article.
If you can, take your bike home.
If you do need to leave it, make sure to follow Security’s advice on keeping it safe.
Secure it to proper bike racks with a ‘sold secure’ rated D lock and register your bike with the national Bike Register database.
Residence energy saving competition
We are collaborating with the University's very own Energy Team to run a residence energy saving competition over the winter break!
The competition will run from Saturday 13 December – Sunday 11 January (inclusive).
The prize for the winning buildings will be a free social for your residence in Terrace, Leeds University Union. This will be in February and will include a free drinks voucher that can be redeemed at the bar.
