All the uni essentials you NEED to pack
A complete guide on what (and what not) to bring.
As you prepare for your exciting new university adventure, it's essential to gear up for the big move. Are you aware of the must-have items you should bring along? To ensure you don't overlook anything, here's a comprehensive list of essentials categorised by each room:
Bedroom
- Photos or decorations - they’ll help you settle in and make the place feel like home.
- Bedding — pillows, duvet, covers, pillowcases, and sheets. Make your bed as comfy as possible!
- Clothes/sportswear - remember to pack for all kinds of weather as you can expect them all in Leeds. Any sportswear or gym gear as well so you keep on top of your fitness after you move in.
Bathroom
- Towels - always bring at least two so you'll have a spare or can alternate between the two when one is in the wash.
- Toiletries - toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, combs, body wash. Everything you need to keep yourself clean.
- Toilet paper - always good to bring one along for your first day!
Kitchen/Living room
- Cleaning supplies - surface wipes, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, sponge, brush. Keep your spaces clean and tidy for you and your flatmates.
- Kitchenware & cutlery - everything you need to be able to make your favourite meal and then eat it properly. Pots, pans, plates, bowls, knives and forks.
- Snacks and teas/coffees - until you do your first proper food shop, you'll need a few things to keep you going. A bit of caffeine always goes a long way.
Miscellaneous
- Tech - laptop, phone, chargers, extension leads. You'll need all of these to get by and the extension leads are great for making the most out of your space.
- Money - enough to get the ball rolling until that student loan rocks in. Think about how much you'll need for your first food shop and if there are any extras you need to buy when you move in.
- Medicine (remember to sign up with a GP near your campus too) - make sure to bring the first month's worth of medication if you can so that will give you enough time to sign up for the services you need in Leeds.
- Important documents - driving licence, university acceptance letter, any essential medical documents or proof of who you are.
- Stationary - pens, paper/notepad, post-it notes. Get ready for those lectures!
What NOT to bring
There are also some things that are NOT allowed at uni:
- Deep fat fryers/chip pans
- Candles, incense sticks, tea lights
- Fairy lights or LED strip lights
- Smoking equipment, like pipes and ashtrays (remember smoking is banned indoors within accommodation)
- Dartboards or weapons of any sort
No need to stress if you forget some essentials. You can easily grab most things after you arrive at uni. But a little bit of prep beforehand will make moving in a smooth process. That way, you'll have more time to make new friends and settle in comfortably. So, relax and get ready for an amazing experience!
