Moving to university is exciting, but packing for Leeds can be a challenge, especially if you're not used to the UK's famously unpredictable weather.
One day could be warm and sunny, while the next brings rain, wind, and much cooler temperatures.
The key to dressing for Leeds is being prepared for a variety of conditions.
Don't panic if you don't have enough space!
As the University is in the city, you will have access to fantastic clothes shops, both first and second hand so don't panic if you don't have room for everything you can easily stock up when you move.
Everyday essentials
You'll spend most of your time attending lectures, socialising, studying, and exploring the city, so comfortable everyday clothing is a must.
Consider packing:
- T-shirts and tops
- Jeans, trousers, or leggings
- Jumpers and hoodies
- Comfortable trainers
- Casual outfits for daytime activities
Layers are your best friend. Wearing several lighter layers allows you to adapt easily to changing temperatures throughout the day.
A waterproof coat is essential
Leeds experiences its fair share of rain, particularly during autumn and winter.
A good waterproof jacket or coat will quickly become one of the most useful items in your wardrobe.
It can also be useful to have a compact umbrella for your bag but you can buy these in Leeds that you can keep in your bag.
Warm clothing for winter
Temperatures can drop significantly between November and February, particularly in the evenings.
Don't forget to bring:
- Warm jumpers
- Thick socks
- A winter coat
- Hat, scarf, and gloves
- Thermal layers if you tend to feel the cold
These items will help keep you comfortable whether you're heading to lectures or walking back from a night out.
Clothes for sport and exercise
University is a great opportunity to stay active, whether that's through Active Campus sessions, The Edge gym, sports clubs, or simply exploring Leeds on foot.
Useful items include:
- Sports tops and shorts
- Leggings or joggers
- Trainers suitable for exercise
- Swimwear if you plan to use the pool
- A reusable water bottle
Formal and Smart Clothes
While most university life is casual, there may be occasions where you'd like something smarter.
You may want to pack:
- An outfit for interviews or careers events
- Clothes for formal dinners or celebrations
- Smart shoes
You don't need an extensive formal wardrobe, but having one or two smart outfits can be useful.
Fancy dress and theme nights
Some events include themed socials, society activities, and fancy-dress nights.
You don't need to arrive with a suitcase full of costumes, but bringing one fun outfit or accessory can be helpful.
Don't worry if you don't have anything suitable. Leeds has plenty of shops where you can pick something up later!
Top packing tip:
If you're unsure whether to bring something, ask yourself: "Will I wear this regularly?"
Prioritise versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. You'll quickly discover your favourite outfits for campus life, and you can always swap seasonal items during visits home.
