Ambience

Lighting: Lighting can dramatically change a space, whether you prefer natural lighting or low lighting.

  • Open your blinds for natural light during the day
  • At night you may prefer to use a lamp for some warmer, less harsh lighting
  • Try not to expose yourself to blue light from screens in the evening as this can affect your sleep

Please note that fairy lights are prohibited in accommodation, however lamps/ Lumie Lights will be beneficial.

Sound: Music can help you to relax and focus.

Consider listening to calm, slow music to create a peaceful environment. You could try listening to white noise which has been found to contribute to a calm space.

Scent: Diffusers can be used to create a pleasant scent in your room, however please note candles and incense are prohibited in halls.

Air freshener is also sold in many supermarkets/ home stores and can changed the vibe of a room based on the scent you choose.

Bring outside, indoors

  • Prop open your window for some fresh air, and encourage natural light, which enhances energy and serotonin levels
  • Decorate your room with plants, which purify air and create a calm space

Here are some ideas for plants that may contribute to health. You can purchase them during Welcome Week Leeds University Union has a plant sale on campus.

Concentration

Remove any distractions from your space.

You may want to turn off your devices when you sleep, mute notifications, or hide them somewhere out of reach. Headphones or foam earplugs can help with concentration too.

If you want to associate your room with sleep/rest, you can use your common room area or a library/bookable study spot on campus to concentrate.
