Plenty of opportunities to lend a helping hand

There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to lend a helping hand to creating and conservating beautiful outdoor spaces.

As we are facing a climate crisis, it's important that we all do our bit to ensure our natural environments are taken care of and looked after. Our natural spaces, from forests to beaches and wetlands, play a critical role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting countless plant and animal species.

Volunteering to help maintain these spaces not only helps the environment, but is also a fantastic way to get involved in your community, meet like-minded individuals, and enjoy the great outdoors. Spending time outdoors, breathing in fresh air, and taking part in physical activity can have a massive positive impact on both your mental and physical health.

So, why wait? Get out there to make a positive impact on the world around you. There are plenty of chances to get involved this year, so if it sounds like your kinda thing, sign up for some of the activities below!

We'll be running Wild Work Days throughout the year in partnership with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust where you'll have the chance to help maintain natural spaces throughout Leeds and beyond. Our next events are:

Wednesday 16th October 2024 at Kirkstall Valley

Wednesday 6th November 2024 at Rothwell Country Park

To sign up for these events, email Mike Leonard by clicking the link below. Lunch will be provided and transport may be available upon request. Please include in your email whether you require transport to the location, along with details of any dietary requirements and medical conditions that may affect your experience.

If you are attending a Wild Work Day, you are advised to bring or wear the following:

  • A strong pair of boots or wellies (wellington boots).
  • A warm hat
  • Several layers of clothing, as we will be working in the open, with very little shelter.
  • Waterproof clothing, just in case!
  • A small rucksack for your personal items, and you may also want to bring a bin liner to keep them dry.
  • A camera or phone for photographs.
  • An extra water bottle, as you will get thirsty with the work.

Our team will also be working with Groundwork Yorkshire at our very own site, the North Hill Well Wood, to help complete further work on the outdoor wellbeing space for students and staff of the University. The work you'll get involved in can vary but includes planting hedges and trees, repairing steps and pathways and helping to install or construct water features for animals or handrails for visitors. Food and hot drinks are provided, and there's access to a toilet in nearby North Hill Court.
