Househunting for next year? Let’s bust some myths.

Looking for your accommodation in Leeds can feel overwhelming but don’t worry, we’re here to clear up some common misconceptions and make your house hunting journey a whole lot easier.

Myth one: You must sign a house early

Reality: Leeds has a huge amount of good quality places for rent so don’t be fooled when you hear, "the good ones go early", there will be somewhere that suits you, even if you don't find it straight away!

It's okay if you need to take time to decide the type of place, area and who you want to live with so you make the best decision for you.

Myth two: You don’t need to read the tenancy agreement

Reality: Tenancy agreements are extremely important and can influence the responsibilities you have in your accommodation.

You can get support from LUU using their contract checking service to ensure you know your rights going into the housing agreement and make an informed decision.

Myth three: You can back out of a contract

Reality: If you or your housemate needs to back out of a contract, it can be complicated and costly to do.

Make sure everyone is fully in agreement before signing to avoid future difficulties. If you need support though you can learn more about ending your contact on Citizens Advice website

Myth four: Living with more people is cheaper and more fun

Reality: Although larger groups reduce the rent per person, you may have to navigate more conflict and stress.

Don’t feel like you need to live in a massive group, instead you might want to consider the type of housemate you are and the type of housemates you would enjoy living with - for example are you an early bird or a night owl? Maybe you prefer a quiet night in over a night out in town.

Take the time to consider who fits your idea of good housemates rather than living with everyone you know.

Myth five: Landlords and Agencies need to uphold spoken promises

Reality: If it isn’t in writing, your landlord or agency does not need to do anything (like professional cleaning or repairs) make sure to get everything in writing to avoid disappointment before you sign your contract.

Myth six: Students can’t negotiate

Reality: You are still paying for a service so you should ask for repairs, upgrades or clarifications.

If you need support, you can reach out to LUU who can support you with landlord or contract issues.

Myth seven: You have to manage the house hunt alone

Reality: There is a lot of support available for you, so make sure to use it! LUU housing team can support you by looking over contracts, supporting you with any conflict that arises with Landlords or Letting agencies and more.
