Feeling homesick is totally normal

Homesickness is a common feeling among students who move away from home for the first time. It can make you miss your family, friends, pets, or familiar surroundings. It can also affect your mood, motivation, and academic performance.

But don’t worry, homesickness is not a sign of weakness or failure. It’s a natural and normal reaction to change and transition. And the good news is that there are many ways to cope with it and make the most of your university life. In this article, we will share some tips on how to deal with homesickness and enjoy your new adventure.

Try something new

University is a great place to try new things. Find a society or a club that suits you. Pick up a new skill or a hobby. Keep yourself busy and interested in your studies and other activities. You’ll get to know new people and find new passions.

Get out of your room

Try not to stay in your room all the time. You can make friends and have fun with your flatmates. Aim to do something enjoyable together every week, like playing a game or cooking a meal together. You’ll feel more connected and less isolated.

Even just going for a walk or a run around campus on your own will help you feel a little bit better.

Stay connected

Use social media, phone calls, or video chats to stay connected with your loved ones. Regular phone calls to your family and friends at home will always cheer you up.

Make your room feel like home

Bring some things from home that make you feel happy and comfortable. It could be a blanket, a toy, or some photos. These will help you feel closer to home.

Look after yourself

Your well-being is important. Have a balanced diet, exercise often, and sleep well. These habits will improve your mood, energy, and self-esteem. Plus, exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters.

This also means you should treat yourself every so often. You deserve it!

Share your feelings

You are not the only one who feels homesick. Many other students are experiencing the same thing as most people are in a similar situation to you. Talk to your friends, lecturers, or student services if you need some support. They will listen and help you cope.

This goes both ways too. If you have a friend who's struggling, sometimes just listening to what they have to say can be a big help.

Remember, the RLAs in your hall are students who've been through this all before so they're a good person to have a chat and get some advice from. 

Stay positive

It’s okay to have some bad days, but not to let them ruin your mood. 

Focus on the positive aspects of your new life and the opportunities ahead of you. Whenever you feel down, do something that makes you laugh or smile. Set yourself some goals and celebrate your achievements, no matter how big or small.

Homesickness is a natural and normal feeling, but it doesn’t have to ruin your university experience. By following these tips, you can cope with any moments of homesickness and enjoy your new adventure at university.
