As the nights draw in and it gets darker earlier, it’s important to think about how to get home safely after classes or nights out in Leeds. Thankfully, there are plenty of resources available to help you navigate the city safely. Here’s a handy guide to keeping safe during the night.
Plan your journey home
Before heading out, make sure you know how you’ll get back home. Familiarize yourself with bus and taxi routes. If you are walking home, try to stay in well-lit, populated areas.
Leeds University Union (LUU) offers a fantastic Night Bus service, which operates from either 7pm or 8pm (depending on the day) and runs until late into the night. This service is free for students and provides a reliable way to get home after an evening out, and you can wait for the next bus at the stop in LUU’s foyer. Keep an eye on the schedule so you know when to catch it!
If you find yourself needing a taxi but are low on cash, LUU has partnered with local taxi firm Amber. You can leave your student card with them and then collect the card and pay the fare at LUU a few days later. This is a great option if you’re caught short but still need to get home safely.
Uber also lets you easily pay for your ride using your card, and includes various safety features, such as the ability to share your ride details with friends, ensuring you stay connected and secure during your journey.
Buddy up
There’s safety in numbers, so when you’re going out, it’s always best to stay with friends or at least make sure someone knows your plans. Agree on a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.
If you find yourself walking home alone for any reason, use the following apps to keep you safe:
- SafeZone App: This app allows you to request help quickly and easily, providing peace of mind when you’re out and about. It’s available for both Apple and Android devices.
- WalkSafe Leeds App: Launched by Leeds City Council, this app suggests the safest routes home, tracks your journey, and offers assistance if you encounter any problems along the way.
Look out for each other
Student life is all about making friends and looking out for each other. If you see someone who looks vulnerable or in need of help, don’t hesitate to offer support or contact someone who can assist them.
Be aware of your surroundings
When you're out at night, keep your phone handy, but avoid walking with your head down, focused solely on your screen. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially when walking between venues, waiting for transport, or withdrawing money from ATMs.
Keep your belongings safe
Busy nightlife areas are prime spots for pickpockets. Keep your valuables secure by using zipped bags, and avoid carrying too much cash or expensive items when you go out.
Drink responsibly
Alcohol can impair judgment, making it easier to find yourself in unsafe situations. Drink responsibly and stay within your limits. Keep an eye on your drink at all time. If you feel unwell or unsafe after drinking, don’t hesitate to ask bar staff for help—many venues have protocols in place to support people who are feeling vulnerable.
Know the safe places
Leeds has several “Safe Spaces” initiatives that provide support and shelter for anyone who feels at risk. The Leeds Street Angels and Student Night Marshals patrol key areas to help students and revellers. You can also visit the Leeds University Union (LUU) building or the 24-hour help desk at Leeds Train Station for assistance if you need it.
Stay connected
Make sure your phone is charged before heading out, and consider carrying a portable charger. Keep emergency contacts easily accessible, and save local emergency numbers like Leeds University security and local taxi firms. It’s also a good idea to let someone know when you’ve arrived home safely.
In case of an emergency, remember that the Security Services are available 24/7 in your residences. You can reach them by calling:
- Emergency: 0113 343 2222
- Non-Emergency: 0113 343 5494
