We hope you’ve had an exciting first few weeks at Leeds! Hopefully you’re starting to feel settled in your new home and have had the chance to meet lots of new people, try some events and activities and maybe even do some studying!  

We know that sometimes the amount of different opportunities available at University can be a bit overwhelming, so as the year goes on we’ll try and keep you regularly updated with some of the most relevant ones.  

Fancy winning a £5,000 tech bundle?!  

If you top up your Circuit laundry account with PayPal you’ll be in with a chance of winning one of four £5,000 tech bundles with Circuit and PayPal. The bundles include a 50" Neo QLED TV, 16" Galaxy Book3 Ultra and GalaxyZ Fold5. To enter you need to:   

  • Sign in or register with Circuit on their site or mobile app 

  • Top up your Circuit account with at least £10 using PayPal 

  • Do a wash or dry cycle before 6pm on 26 October 2023

University Buddy Scheme 

Whether you’re a new or returning student, you can apply for the University Buddy Scheme at any point in the year. It’s easy to apply, you just fill in an application form to tell us about your interests and then you’ll be matched with a student at the same level of study as you who shares similar interests.  

Peer mentoring scheme for Black students at Leeds 

The Plus Programme is recruiting undergraduate students to become mentees and mentors on their successful Black student peer mentoring scheme. This opportunity includes access to bespoke workshops, social events and physical and digital spaces to connect with one another. If you take part you’ll also have access to 1:1 life coaching with professional life coaches.   

The scheme is aimed at closing the academic gaps between Black students and their white peers.

Virtual work experience programme

The Careers Centre is running an exciting two-week virtual work experience programme aimed at students from all years who want to develop skills and add to their CV. There are 200 places available and the course will run in November 2023 and February 2024. Applications close on Sunday 5 November.

A global opportunity based in Leeds 

Are you looking for a programme that will give you global skills without having to move abroad? Or are you simply looking for a volunteering experience this year? Then apply to be an Intercultural Ambassador. You’ll work in diverse groups to inspire other students and members of our city community by running volunteering projects that aim to bring people together and provide an opportunity to learn from different cultural backgrounds.  Applications close on Sunday 22 October.

Global Café - a space to meet new people 

Global Café is a regular event for everyone from everywhere. It’s a space to meet, and over the years it’s turned into much more than that. It’s a place where new friendships are made, a place for exploring diversity and somewhere you can simply regularly meet to enjoy free refreshments.   

International student support and activities  

Moving to University is a big step for everyone, but it can be especially daunting if it involves moving to a new country as well. But don’t worry, there’s lots of support available from across the University.

Workshops to help you adjust to life in the UK

International students or postgraduate researchers can apply for the Feeling at Home in Leeds workshops. These will guide you through different aspects of adjusting to life in the UK, including academic culture and making connections at university. Applications close on 22 October. 

Pen pal scheme to help tackle loneliness

Adjusting to life abroad has its ups and downs and it can feel like a lonely experience at times. At the same time, older residents might also experience similar feelings. This pen pal scheme matches you with an older resident to share letters (or emails) and tackle loneliness together. Applications close on 22 October. 

Free wellbeing course 

The British Council is running a free online course called ‘Managing Your Wellbeing Whilst Studying in the UK’. Over three weeks you’ll learn how to overcome cultural challenges, combat and manage stress and build strong support networks.
