Life in Leeds

How to spend your first fortnight in Leeds

By ResLifeLeeds 14 Aug 2023

Fun things you can fit in those two weeks.

When it's time to kick off your university adventure in Leeds, you may be wondering where you should begin. The initial two weeks on campus are a rollercoaster ride where we're sure you'll be busy, but you got to make sure to make time for fun activities too. Follow this handy guide on what things to do first in Leeds.

Attend welcome events

The best way to get the ball rolling is by diving into the deep end. During those first weeks, there will be plenty of events hosted by us and your Student Union. These events will be designed to give you newbies a space to socialise and make new friends. You can find out what's happening by checking out the Events tab or by looking at the Residence Life events calendars around your halls. You should also consider joining a society or club as they will also host events early on to get everyone doing a related activity together.

Take a look at our video showing moving in and welcome events last year!

Explore your campus

Get acquainted with your university campus by either using the official campus map or just by having a wander around. Find your classrooms, discover hidden study spots, learn about key facilities and discover the cheapest pint on campus. This will be your home away from home after all so it will be a fun but useful activity to do.

Explore the city and make connections

Once you've introduced yourself to fellow students, flatmates, and neighbours you might want to get to know them more. The best way to do this is by making memories and thankfully Leeds is jammed packed with things to do and places to visit. Cinemas, shopping, crazy golf, art galleries, bars, you name it. Find common ground and pick an activity that everyone can enjoy. We'd recommend giving the ninja warrior course a go or you can always visit iconic Leeds spots such as Millennium Square or The Corn Exchange. Don't forget your camera for a snap.

Dining Adventures

For all the foodies out there, Leeds doesn't disappoint with a diverse range of cuisines at local eateries across the city. Explore food markets like Kirkgate Market for both eat-out and eat-in options or look out for lunchtime/student deals to make the most of the many restaurants. We'd recommend checking out Crown Hotpot which is just across from the library.

Outdoor Adventures

Take a breather from studies at Hyde Park, Meanwood Park or Roundhay Park. Enjoy a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or a kickabout. If you venture a little further out then there are also plenty of amazing walks and hikes in the Yorkshire countryside, easily reached by train or bus.

Remember to have fun, be open to new experiences, and treasure the memories you'll make during this exciting chapter of your life. Enjoy every moment of those first fortnight knowing there's plenty more to come.
