Black student life in Leeds: Societies

By LucyMcDonald 09 Oct 2023

Meeting lots of new people is one of the best things about coming to University, but one of the biggest worries students have about moving to University is that you won't find people you can connect with.

Joining societies is a great way to branch out and meet others with similar interests and hobbies, and from similar backgrounds and communities. Here are some societies at the University of Leeds and beyond that celebrate different cultures, and encourage their members to express themselves and succeed!

African Caribbean Society (ACS), Leeds University Union

"The University of Leeds African-Caribbean Society (ACS) is a society bounded by the celebration and education of African and Caribbean culture; a home away from home and a pathway to cultural enlightenment.

We aim to showcase the beauty of African and Caribbean culture at the university and within the wider community in Leeds.

Our mission is to cultivate an environment of talented individuals who can be provided with a platform to confidently express themselves and inspire one another. We aim to host a range of social and academic events in order to encourage an aspiration for excellence whilst strengthening our sense of community."

Black Feminist Society, Leeds University Union

"The focus of our society is black feminism, black women and black non-binary people.

We operate with values of openness, respect and inclusion and we particularly welcome other women of colour and non-binary people of colour.

Our aim is to create a welcoming, supportive space for our members. Our events range from meetings where we discuss topics that affect black women and black non-binary people to socials where we celebrate ourselves, our culture and our community.

We operate as a safe space for people of colour. Homophobic, misogynistic, racist, Islamophobic, transphobic and ableist remarks and cultural stereotyping will not be tolerated."
